Last year's reports about the demise of the Lexus LF-A may have been greatly exaggerated, and according to the fabulists at AutoExpress, Lexus' long-awaited supercar is due to be revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show this October.
Toyota insiders told the Brit pub - in so many words - that the LF-A's delay was due to a series of engineering tweaks to boost the sleek supercar's top speed. Initially, the LF-A topped out at 199 mph, which ToMoCo execs decided was too slow... [Read More]

Toyota said to be increasing Prius production to meet early demand |
|

Toyota's third-generation Prius couldn't come at a better time for the automaker. Sales of just about every one of the company's models are down, and the Aishi, Japan-based automaker lost $7.7 billion last quarter. To make matters worse, sales of the second-generation Prius hit a wall in April, with sales in the U.S. dipping to 8,385 units, down 65% versus April 2008 levels. But the ebb in that model's sales could have a lot more to do with the imminent arrival of the 50 miles-per-gallon 2010 Prius, which is now in production.
Early reports coming out of Toyota are that the 2010 Prius is primed for big sales. There are already 80,000 global orders for the Prius, and some reports (which Toyota has so far... [Read More]

When car buyers think of hybrids, the name that most often springs to mind is the Toyota Prius since it was the first really practical hybrid to come to market and has sold more than any other examples. Yes, of course, the original Honda Insight beat the Prius to market in the U.S. by about six months, but the tiny two-seater sold in equally tiny numbers and had limited appeal beyond hard core hyper milers.
In the coming weeks, Toyota dealers will start getting their first allotments of the all-new third-generation Prius, and while we got to spend a few hours with one on the west coast in March, we just spent a whole week with the new version of this iconic Toyota. While the efficiency of the Prius has... [Read More]

Casual Mafia relishes "In My Prius" rap video. So do we |

The latest video from Casual Mafia, called "In My Prius," would be a winner if for no other reason than it uses a dad wearing a Snügli as a backup dancer. It gets better though, with references to the ozone layer (back in effect!) and the HOV lane that shows a deep understanding of what makes the Prius so appealing. Given that Casual Mafia is the sketch comedy team behind the "Douchbag Anthem," there's a real good chance (read: 100%) the new video is nothing more than love/hate snark, but who cares when it feels so fun to watch?

STUDY: Toyota and Honda supplier relations suffer while Ford, GM improve |
|

In the latest installment of an annual supplier relations survey put together by Planning Perspectives, Honda and Toyota have upheld their top positions in spite of suppliers describing downgrading them to merely "adequate." Still above average in supplier relations rankings (along with Nissan), previously Japan's two largest automakers were ranked "good to very good." Honda is still gets top marks for involving suppliers in product development and for helping suppliers lower costs and increase quality, while Toyota's decline was attributed to "less experienced staff in Toyota's purchasing group for whom the 'Toyota Way' is not yet the way of doing things."
Domestically, the... [Read More]

Toyota denying supposed hybrid deal with GM? |

General Motors is enduring the worst predicament in its 100-year history, and the Detroit-based automaker isn't alone in its struggle. Toyota is also losing billions of dollars, though the Japanese automaker is far healthier than the General... for the time being. Given the less-than-ideal position of both automakers, a recent report from Japanese newspaper Yomiuri stated Toyota was thinking about offering its hybrid tech to GM made some sense. Toyota could use the cash, and GM might be able to use fast access to additional proven hybrid technology without spending more money on R&D. If GM adapted Toyota's hybrid tech, the system would also become the de-facto standard of the automotive world.
Toyota has denied the report, though, but the Aishi, Japan-based automaker insists that it is always open to sharing its hybrid tech with other automakers where it makes sense. We're guessing the key to sharing its hybrid tech includes other automakers approaching Toyota for help instead of the process... [Read More]

2009 Monaco Grand Prix - Click above for high-res image gallery
Another race, another week of wondering whether the other Formula 1 teams would make enough progress to catch Brawn GP. Saturday's qualifying session for the Monaco Grand Prix looked pretty familiar, save for a sorely missed flash of red on the front row. This week's top three? Not surprisingly, Brawn's Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello bracketing Ferrari's former champion, Kimi Raikkonen. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was fourth, with last year's runner-up, Felipe Massa fifth in the other Ferrari. Massa had shown the updated F60's potential by qualifying fourth last time out in Spain, but it was refreshing to see both Ferraris in the front three... [Read More]

REPORT: Toyota questions demand for plug-ins, cost, range, durability concerns |
|
May 21, 2009 - 4:47 PM - by Toyota Forum

We all know that there is a hardcore group of consumers out there chanting the mantra of "No plug, no sale!" Okay, well, at least a few of you. The problem is that, like commenters on the internet, the loud fringe makes most of the noise, but often actually represents a very small percentage of the total population. For the rest of the car buying public, the realities of choosing a new car go well beyond the ability to "refuel" from a plug in the garage. This is the reality that Toyota, General Motors, Nissan, Mitsubishi and others have to face in planning for future electric vehicles.
How many people are actually willing to pay the price in purchase cost, range, and utility for a plug-in vehicle?
While Nissan and Mitsubishi are (publicly at least) very bullish on EVs, Toyota apparently remains more skeptical. Bill Reinert, Toyota's U.S. national manager... [Read More]
